Builder Grade Windows

Builder grade windows are entry level windows that are typically sold to builders instead of consumers (not always but often). This is obviously where the name comes from. Essentially, builders and developers are often looking for a cheap alternative to the best vinyl windows (or even good mid range vinyl windows). This allows them to save money on their projects and increase their profit margins.

Unfortunately, these low quality windows do not typically last more than 12 to 15 years before they begin to have lots of problems. These might include trouble opening, windows fogging up in house, broken hardware, etc. By the time the windows need real attention, the builder has moved on and/or the warranty has expired or provides only a small percentage of economic relief to the homeowner. Any way you slice it, the consumer is left holding the bag.

Bottom Line: Don't buy builder grade windows. But, do collect 3 to 4 bids and compare quotes.

Builder Grade Window Cost

Lower end vinyl windows make up quite a lot of the vinyl window market in general. (Vinyl accounts for roughly 70% of the home window industry and does not seem to be slowing down anytime soon.) In 2024, the low end of the market price point might range from $350 to $650 per window fully installed. The $350 might be for a Jeld Wen window that you buy from Home Depot and pay a handyman to install.

While we advise our site users to avoid using builder grade windows, we don't think you should scrimp on price bids. Getting a handful of window project bids can save you lots of money and can help you distinguish between low quality and good quality windows.
