Gentek Building Products might be a Canadian company, but they have quite a bit of coverage in the U.S. - mainly in much of the the country's eastern half. The company is perhaps best known for vinyl siding and other building materials, as opposed to replacement windows. Nonetheless, the company manufactures and sells three series: the premium Sequoia Select, mid range Signature Elite, and entry level Concord Plus. Signature Elite - Of these three, the window I hear about most from Gentek is the mid range Signature Elite. In fact, I hardly ever hear about the other two. One of the reasons for this is that the Signature Elite is sold by Window Universe, which has been growing rapidly over the past decade or so. In addition to this window installation chain, the window is also sold through certain local window companies throughout much of the eastern part of the country.
Are Gentek Windows Any Good - The Gentek Signature Elite is a good vinyl window. Perhaps not one of the best vinyl windows, but a solid choice with good performance data. All in all, I would give the window a 7.0 out of 10.

Gentek Windows Warranty
Gentek offers a pretty unremarkable warranty - limited lifetime on the vinyl sash and mainframe, all moving parts, the fiberglass screen frame, and insulated glass unit. As well, any exterior frame colors are warranted for 10 years.
The warranty is transferrable one time during the first 30 years (the new owner is covered for 30 years from the original install date. In addition, the new owner has to pay a pro rated amount for replacement after the first 10 years.) Exclusions and limitations apply so always read the warranty before you buy.

"I recently received a quote for the Gentek Signature Elite and was told that it is essentially similar to the Alside Mezzo, but with a block-and-tackle balance system. From what I understand, the exterior design is close to the Mezzo, while some of the internal hardware is different.
I visited the Alside location in Randolph, Massachusetts and looked at the Mezzo in person. That window uses a constant-force balance instead. I'm trying to figure out whether the block-and-tackle system in the Gentek Signature Elite is a meaningful upgrade and whether it justifies the higher price I paid."

Karen, I've spoken with quite a few window professionals over the years, and opinions are divided. Some prefer block-and-tackle balances, while others favor constant-force systems. They operate differently, but I don't personally see one as a major upgrade over the other. How much more did the Gentek Signature Elite cost compared with the Mezzo?

Billy, the Provia Endure price quote looks like the best value to me. Next, I would select on the Gentek Signature Elite. However, if you don't plan to live in the home more than five year, you may want to consider the Harvey Slimline, but I think the Endure series offers by far the most value.
