Bay Window Installation Cost

What does bay window installation cost? We'll break down each step and provide target price points for each part of the process. Generally speaking, bay window costs will run anywhere from $1500 to $5500 fully installed (for a bay window configuration that uses 3 windows). Generally speaking, the material cost (windows and bay box) should account for roughly 2/3 of the project cost. The labor cost should account for roughly 1/3 of the total cost.

Bay Window Installation Cost

"Bay windows are one of the more elaborate window options available for your home and one of the most expensive as well. However, they can add real charm to a home and even add to the square footage of a home."

Bay Windows Cost

First off, bay window pricing is based on both the cost of materials and the cost of labor. So let's break down the materials cost first. Actually, this can be broken up into two categories: the window themselves and the bay box or surround. Let's first tackle the cost of the windows. Bay windows are typically comprised of three separate windows, although certain configurations can include four, five or six windows. Theoretically, you could use more than this, but I'm not sure I've ever seen more than six windows in a bay set up.

The material cost of the windows themselves is relatively easy to calculate (which our calculator above obviously does). Here is some ballpark pricing. Wood clad windows (the most expensive window material on the market) might run $1000 to $2200 per window. Alternatively, fiberglass windows might run $800 to $1600 per window. Lastly, vinyl windows cost (the least expensive window material on the market) might run $400 to $800 per window. FYI, none of these prices include installation.

Here is a simple breakdown of the per window cost without installation. Of course, this is per window so for a bay window configuration that uses five vinyl windows, the mediam windows-only cost will be $3000.

WINDOW MATERIAL PRICE RANGE AVERAGE COST
Wood Clad $1000 to $2200 $1500
Fiberglass $800 to $1600 $1200
Composite $700 to $1500 $1050
Aluminum $700 to $1500 $1050
Vinyl $400 to $800 $600

Cost Of Bay Wood Box And Surround

Most window manufacturers don't actually make the surrounding box that includes everything besides the bay windows themselves. So that's the wood surround and any panels and/or accessory pieces. So, here's how the process works. The window company comes out and measures the space and discusses the window configuration with the homeowner. Once the company and homeowner are on the same page as to the project details, the window company calls up the window box manufacturer and puts in an order. The window box manufacturer custom makes the box and ships it to the window company or the homeowner directly. While it's not the easiest of tasks to do, we estimate the bay window box cost to be $800 to $2000.

Installation Cost

So, we've talked about the windows-only cost and the box cost. Now, let's turn to installation. As I said at the outset, the cost of labor to tear out the old bay window (or whatever was in that hole to begin with) and install and finish the new bay window is going to be roughly 1/3 of the total price. So, if the total project cost is $6000, then the labor will account for somewhere around $2000. The only exception to this rule is if the box and surround are complex/custom and need to be built onsite. Here, the labor costs would go way up, but the box cost would obviously be nullified. This is kind of picking nits though and I think the general 1/3 to 2/3 cost breakdown holds in most cases.

Bay Window Installation Cost Factors

There are a number of factors that dictate whether you'll pay $1500 or $5500 for your bay window project. Here are some the top price factors: the quality of the window brand. Entry level fiberglass windows might be cost $800 and they might cost $1600 each. For three windows, that's a $2400 difference. So, the quality of the brand you buy does make a huge difference. Next up is the company you choose. Choose a company like Renewal By Andersen that has high overhead and marketing costs, and the price tag is going to be toward the top of the range. Choose a smaller company that does good work but relies on online reviews and word of mouth and your price point will be much more reasonable.

Other bay window cost factors include your location. More rural areas tend to be less expensive, while urban areas tend to be more expensive. Similarly, if you live in a high cost state, expect to pay more than if you live in a low cost state. Additional factors include the time of year - summer will have the most demand and therefore be the most expensive compared with the cold winter months when demand is much lower.

Higher Installation Costs

We are pulling out our bay window and replacing it with two double hung windows and a center picture window. We've gotten several bids and it would be a real help if you could help us out. Gilkey's vinyl window inserts and installation came out to be $12.3K, which seems very expensive to me, although they said that the installation and prep to the opening was a big portion of that cost.

Another company called Windows Plus pitched us on the Soft-Lite Elements window with triple pane. So this project total came out to be $9.4K and that included full aluminum screens.

Finally, there was Window Universe, which offers the Gentek Signature Elite windows. This came out to $8.4K, but it did include triple pane windows. Thanks in advance and I did use your bay window installation cost calculator, but it had my project much lower in cost.

Buddy, sorry that the calculator didn't do as good a job as you were hoping. To be honest, we are currently working on an updated calculator that is much more specific and fine tuned to real world situations. So I will send you that link when it is up and running. Okay, so, of the three bids you have, the best one for sure is the Soft-Lite Elements. The price seems good when compared to the other two options. As long as your Windows Plus branch has good reviews, then I think you are set to go!
