Certainteed Class Action Lawsuit

One of the reasons for the company's demise in the window space was the existence of Certainteed class action lawsuits (perhaps just one). These were initiated by customers who claimed that their CertainTeed windows and/or patio doors leaked, warped and cracked. To be honest, I'm not sure how these cases worked out in the courts - I'm not a lawyer so even when I read about the cases, they still confuse me :) Regardless, it was a contributing factor to the company shelving their window and door division. The company was subsequently purchased by Saint Gobain, a holding company that owns plenty of brands across the world.

Today, CertainTeed still exists, but their windows division does not. However, CertainTeed products such as replacement roofing and other building supplies are often sold to homeowners across the United States. When these homeowners ask about windows, the builder and/or contractor might tell them they can sell them CertainTeed windows. The window that is then installed carries the CertainTeed label, but is really a relabeled alternative brand. This is actaully a pretty common occurrence in the window and door industry.

What is important for consumers is to be sure that they know what the actual window is they are buying. The builder or contractor should know the answer to this. If they refuse to give up the info, you might want to consider going with someone who is willing to tell you what you are actually buying.
